Chapter Ten

“You know, Shawn, I understand if you need to leave. You have shown Josie and I a great deal of loyalty already today. I don’t want you to risk your reputation around here. You need to think about your own family now.” Nic stood at Theo’s locker, holding the padlock in his hand. He didn’t feel right asking Shawn to get into another mess today on his and Josie’s behalf. He’d already quit his job and, from what the club staff told him earlier, damn near slugged Gary Goldman after the creep picked on Josie so much he sent her running out of the bar. Good thing Nic wasn’t there. They’d be dragging the lake for Gary’s body about now.

Shawn walked to the locker room door. He looked over his shoulder at Nic. “Didn’t I tell you about six months ago, amigo, that Josie is my family? Like a sister, remember?’ He turned the door’s deadbolt and walked back.

Nic laughed, “Oh yeah. I remember.” He pulled out his Swiss Army knife, and began flipping through the tools. “I must admit, you had me a little nervous about going out with her.”

“Good to know I still have that effect on people. Just wish I had used that same line on Theo. Bastard seemed like such a wimp, it never even occurred to me.”

Nic worked on the lock as he spoke, “He was a wimp. What kind of man lets people treat a woman like that? Why did he do nothing to stop them? To help her? He obviously felt something for her—in his own sick little way.”

Click. Nic lifted his brows and pulled on the padlock, opening it. After he removed it, he opened the locker. Shawn reached in with two fingers and pulled out a pair of athletic shoes. With a grimace, he held them at arm’s length and deposited them in a nearby trash can. “Cheap shoes.”

“What would you expect from a guy with no job, no bank accounts, and no education?”

“He had a job and a car—a crummy one—and a club membership, that’s expensive.”

Nic shook his head, “I don’t know where he got the money for those things. Shawn, I have looked everywhere. I have found no record of a Theo Clarkston who fits the description of the guy we knew. No tax records, no bank records, no school records. This place is my last hope. Maybe there will be something that will give us a lead.”

While Nic started sifting through stale athletic wear, Shawn pulled out a couple pieces of paper tucked along the side and started reading. “Geez, Nic, check this out.”

Nic looked down the page that Shawn was showing him. It looked like a computer printout that started with Josie’s name, age, and birthday, then continued down into a list of her favorite things. Nic read aloud, “Color: Purple. Flower: Lilacs. Food: Italian. Dessert: Cheesecake, Cannolis, and Belgian Chocolates.” He stopped and looked up. “He forgot flan. Probably never had flan with her. Probably does not even know what it is.
